Senator Obama OK After Aircraft Problem in Flight

Typical MD 80 AircraftWhile flying on a loaner MD-80 aircraft, Senator Obama and the other 47 passengers onboard faced an emergency situation in flight today when the rear escape chute, normally folded up inside the rear cone of the aircraft, partially deployed in mid-air. The additional drag caused by the escape chute problem interfered with the control of the aircraft, and the pilot and co-pilot wisely chose to make an emergency landing in St. Louis.

Airline pilots are trained in great detail about how to handle problems, and it seems the gentlemen piloting this plane made the right choice. I’m just glad nobody was injured, now there is no need for crazy conspiracy nutjobs to go crazy over this. Any landing you walk away from is a good landing.

The plane belongs to Midwest Airlines. MD-80s are good airplanes. I’m guessing a maintenance error might be involved.
